first_img Email Address Inquiry will cover immersive technologies such as virtual and augmented reality, and explore esports regulations and opportunities Casino & games Regions: UK & Ireland The UK parliament’s Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee is to investigate links between video gaming and gambling as part of a new inquiry into “immersive and addictive technologies”.The inquiry will focus primarily on new technologies such as virtual and augmented reality, as well as the growing popularity of esports. The increasing digitisation and “gamification” of people’s lives will also be examined, to ascertain whether the existing regulatory landscape is sufficient to protect consumer rights, whilst helping the sector to grow in the UK.In-game purchases, especially with regards to their effects on children, will also come under scrutiny, as well as the blurring of lines between video games and gambling.To date there has been little action against the convergence of video games and gambling, with the UK Gambling Commission maintaining a watching brief on elements such as loot boxes. These see players rewarded with a randomly-assigned virtual item in return for cash, and are prevalent in games such as the Call of Duty and FIFA franchises.Regulators in the Netherlands and Belgium claim that loot boxes use the same mechanics as a slot machine, and have forced developers to make changes to the games in each country.The committee has invited the public, organisations and other relevant stakeholders to submit evidence for the inquiry by January 14.“During our recent inquiries, the committee has heard repeated concerns about the impact to society of the increasing amounts of time that people spend immersed in online worlds, and the potentially addictive nature of social media and gaming,” said the committee’s chair, Damian Collins.“We want to explore these concerns during this inquiry and consider what the right response should be in setting public policy for the future.“The committee will also consider how individuals’ online data is used by immersive technologies and what security is offered.”According to the committee, spending on gaming in the UK hit a record £5.11bn in 2017, up 12.4%  on the previous year. The committee also cited a study by the British eSports Association that global revenues from competitive video gaming are expected to reach £1bn by 2020.“We’re seeing industries emerge that offer enormous potential for growth such as esports and gaming where the UK is rightly regarded as a world leader in production,” Collins added.“We’ll be looking at what action is needed to ensure we remain a key player. Technology such as virtual reality and augmented reality is already an important asset to the film industry, simulated training, and gaming. Marketing investment boosts bet-at-home revenue in Q1

An increase in betting fees and gaming levies to €5.3m was offset by a significant reduction in Value Added Tax on electronic services – down 55.6% to €850,000 – left net revenue of €31.1m.Over the quarter the operator reported a rise in expenses, with personnel costs up 5.6% to €4.6m, and marketing costs rising 6.9% to €8.2m. The bulk of marketing spend went on bonuses and player vouchers, which accounted for €3.2m (38.5%) of the total, followed by advertising costs of €2.1m. The marketing investment helped grow customer numbers 4.1% to 5.1m as of March 31, 2019.This increased investment in marketing was to continue throughout 2019, bet-at-home said, with TV advertising, print and online media, bonus promotions and sponsorship agreements to be used to raise brand awareness.Coupled with other operating expenses growing 21.2% to €6.0m, this left earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation of €12.7m, a 35.6% year-on-year rise.Once amortisation and depreciation-related expenses of €460,000, plus €24,000 in finance costs were stripped out, bet-at-home posted a pre-tax profit of €12.2m. After income taxes of €4.4m (up 33.8%), the operator’s net profit for the quarter was up 35.4% at €7.8m.“The results for the first quarter of 2019 reflect the success of the targeted marketing investments in the financial year 2018, as gross betting and gaming revenues as well as all key earnings figures increased significantly year-on-year,” the operator’s chief executives Franz Ömer and Michael Quatember said.Despite the first quarter growth, the operator anticipates a fall in gross betting and gaming revenue in 2019. This, it said, was largely due to legal uncertainty in the Swiss market, where the igaming market is to be restricted to offerings launched by the country’s land-based casinos.As a result gross revenue for the year is projected to fall between €130m and €143m, with EBITDA expected to come in between €29m and €33m. But with the signing into law of legislation to legalise sports betting in December, it’s fair to say the sleeping giant is now waking up.Although the structure for the regulated sports betting market will be decided over a two-year consultation process and the details of how the regulation will unfold are still unclear, analysts and market watchers are hopeful an open licensing structure will be adopted.If that comes to pass, analysis from Morgan Stanley suggests that the Brazilian sports betting market might be worth up to £1.6bn annually at maturity within five years. The team suggests there is an untapped enthusiasm for gaming in the country, where the regulated offering is currently confined to the lottery and a small amount of horse race betting.Although much of the attention is currently focused on sports betting, more immediately, the instant lottery concession (Lotex) will be decided imminently, while there are also plans for a bill allowing integrated resort casinos across the country.Online gaming is also a potential prospect, although any progress would likely depend on a successful sports betting launch.
