Email Address Inquiry will cover immersive technologies such as virtual and augmented reality, and explore esports regulations and opportunities Casino & games Regions: UK & Ireland The UK parliament’s Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee is to investigate links between video gaming and gambling as part of a new inquiry into “immersive and addictive technologies”.The inquiry will focus primarily on new technologies such as virtual and augmented reality, as well as the growing popularity of esports. The increasing digitisation and “gamification” of people’s lives will also be examined, to ascertain whether the existing regulatory landscape is sufficient to protect consumer rights, whilst helping the sector to grow in the UK.In-game purchases, especially with regards to their effects on children, will also come under scrutiny, as well as the blurring of lines between video games and gambling. To date there has been little action against the convergence of video games and gambling, with the UK Gambling Commission maintaining a watching brief on elements such as loot boxes. These see players rewarded with a randomly-assigned virtual item in return for cash, and are prevalent in games such as the Call of Duty and FIFA franchises.Regulators in the Netherlands and Belgium claim that loot boxes use the same mechanics as a slot machine, and have forced developers to make changes to the games in each country. The committee has invited the public, organisations and other relevant stakeholders to submit evidence for the inquiry by January 14.“During our recent inquiries, the committee has heard repeated concerns about the impact to society of the increasing amounts of time that people spend immersed in online worlds, and the potentially addictive nature of social media and gaming,” said the committee’s chair, Damian Collins.“We want to explore these concerns during this inquiry and consider what the right response should be in setting public policy for the future.“The committee will also consider how individuals’ online data is used by immersive technologies and what security is offered.”According to the committee, spending on gaming in the UK hit a record £5.11bn in 2017, up 12.4% on the previous year. The committee also cited a study by the British eSports Association that global revenues from competitive video gaming are expected to reach £1bn by 2020.“We’re seeing industries emerge that offer enormous potential for growth such as esports and gaming where the UK is rightly regarded as a world leader in production,” Collins added.“We’ll be looking at what action is needed to ensure we remain a key player. Technology such as virtual reality and augmented reality is already an important asset to the film industry, simulated training, and gaming. We want to understand more about its potential and the future impact it could have on society.” Subscribe to the iGaming newsletter 10th December 2018 | By contenteditor AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter Topics: Casino & games Esports Legal & compliance Social gaming Parliament to probe links between gambling and video gaming

An increase in betting fees and gaming levies to €5.3m was offset by a significant reduction in Value Added Tax on electronic services – down 55.6% to €850,000 – left net revenue of €31.1m.Over the quarter the operator reported a rise in expenses, with personnel costs up 5.6% to €4.6m, and marketing costs rising 6.9% to €8.2m. The bulk of marketing spend went on bonuses and player vouchers, which accounted for €3.2m (38.5%) of the total, followed by advertising costs of €2.1m. The marketing investment helped grow customer numbers 4.1% to 5.1m as of March 31, 2019.This increased investment in marketing was to continue throughout 2019, bet-at-home said, with TV advertising, print and online media, bonus promotions and sponsorship agreements to be used to raise brand awareness.Coupled with other operating expenses growing 21.2% to €6.0m, this left earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation of €12.7m, a 35.6% year-on-year rise.Once amortisation and depreciation-related expenses of €460,000, plus €24,000 in finance costs were stripped out, bet-at-home posted a pre-tax profit of €12.2m. After income taxes of €4.4m (up 33.8%), the operator’s net profit for the quarter was up 35.4% at €7.8m.“The results for the first quarter of 2019 reflect the success of the targeted marketing investments in the financial year 2018, as gross betting and gaming revenues as well as all key earnings figures increased significantly year-on-year,” the operator’s chief executives Franz Ömer and Michael Quatember said.Despite the first quarter growth, the operator anticipates a fall in gross betting and gaming revenue in 2019. This, it said, was largely due to legal uncertainty in the Swiss market, where the igaming market is to be restricted to offerings launched by the country’s land-based casinos. As a result gross revenue for the year is projected to fall between €130m and €143m, with EBITDA expected to come in between €29m and €33m. Casino & games Welcome to iGB’s sixth e-zine, on a market often described as a “sleeping giant” by those in the igaming industry. A population of 210 million with a clear propensity for gambling – albeit largely illegally at present – and a huge sporting culture has understandably given rise to widespread optimism about the Brazilian opportunity.Until late last year, however, there was little indication as to when the industry would be able to seize that opportunity. But with the signing into law of legislation to legalise sports betting in December, it’s fair to say the sleeping giant is now waking up.Although the structure for the regulated sports betting market will be decided over a two-year consultation process and the details of how the regulation will unfold are still unclear, analysts and market watchers are hopeful an open licensing structure will be adopted. If that comes to pass, analysis from Morgan Stanley suggests that the Brazilian sports betting market might be worth up to £1.6bn annually at maturity within five years. The team suggests there is an untapped enthusiasm for gaming in the country, where the regulated offering is currently confined to the lottery and a small amount of horse race betting.Although much of the attention is currently focused on sports betting, more immediately, the instant lottery concession (Lotex) will be decided imminently, while there are also plans for a bill allowing integrated resort casinos across the country.Online gaming is also a potential prospect, although any progress would likely depend on a successful sports betting launch. A report put together by KPMG on behalf of the Remote Gaming Association (RGA) in late 2017 suggested a combined online betting and gaming market would be worth up to $2.1bn annually. This report looks at the current state of play in Brazil, discusses what future regulation could look like and how this will impact market size, and considers which operators are best placed to benefit from a regulated market in the country.E-zine contentsIntroduction: A waking giantPart 1: Setting the scene.Part 2: The curious case of Brazilian bingoPart 3: The online sports betting opportunityPart 4: The current market shapePart 5: Lottery expansion and beyond Topics: Casino & games Legal & compliance Lottery Sports betting Regions: LATAM Brazil Brazil e-zine iGB explores the current state of play, how future regulation could impact market size and which operators are best placed to benefit from a regulated market in Brazil AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter 24th May 2019 | By Stephen Carter Subscribe to the iGaming newsletter Email Address

7th May 2020 | By contenteditor The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) has called on the Welsh government to extend the Business Rates Retail Discount to include betting shops, bingo halls and casinos in order to help protect industry jobs in the country. Tags: OTB and Betting Shops AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter Email Address Regions: UK & Ireland Subscribe to the iGaming newsletter Topics: Casino & games Finance Legal & compliance Bingo BGC urges Welsh government to protect industry jobs The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) has called on the Welsh government to extend the Business Rates Retail Discount to include betting shops, bingo halls and casinos in order to help protect industry jobs in the country. The UK government in March expanded the new scheme to cover such venues, meaning they will receive 100% business rates relief in recognition that they had to close as part of measures to slow the spread of novel coronavirus (Covid-19).However, current Welsh government policy stipulates that the discount does not apply to betting shops, which the BGC said will put jobs at risk across the sector.According to the BGC, Wales hosts over 300 betting shops and four casinos, and if the national government does not amend its policy, all of the venues may be at risk of permanent closure and over 2,000 people could lose their jobs.BGC chief executive Michael Dugher wrote to Welsh finance minister Rebecca Evans to outline his concerns about the current policy.“Without assistance with business rates relief, similar to that offered to other sectors in Wales, including other parts of the hospitality, leisure and entertainment industries, there is a real danger that betting shops and casinos will permanently close leading to the direct loss of over 2000 jobs in Wales,” he said.“Betting shops, bingo halls and casinos in England were thrown a lifeline when the UK government announced it was extending its business rates relief scheme to cover their premises as well, recognising the contribution they make to the economy, to sport and the vital part they are playing in the national effort and in communities to cope with the virus.”The change in UK government policy regarding the scheme came after the BGC hit out at the initial proposals, at the time describing the decision to exclude casinos and gambling clubs “bizarre”.“I don’t for a single second think that the Welsh government is saying that 2,000 workers in Wales who are employed in the regulated betting industry are less worthy of the support they get in England, but we urgently need a re-think on rates,” Dugher said.“These 2,000 jobs are hardworking men and women with bills to pay and families to care for. Their jobs are worth every bit as much as someone doing the same job in England.” Bingo
He explained that as long as it is possible to gamble anonymously, criminals will be able to fly under the radar, as well as allowing minors to take part in gambling activities. The initiative was announced in November 2019, and though the operator admitted that it was likely to hit profits, this was a worthwhile trade-off for providing greater protection of children and preventing money laundering. Safer gaming is also the largest accountability initiative in the history of the gaming industry, and we have had to ensure that our dealers have been well prepared and thus provide customers with the necessary assistance.” “That is why we have run the rollout in stages. Fortunately, our customers have generally welcomed Sikkert Spil, as they want to help create a safe gaming market.” AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter In addition to the protection of minors from exposure to gambling, the Sikkert Spil system will make it more difficult for criminals to exploit the gambling industry for either money laundering or sports manipulation, as all bets can now be tracked across retail and online. Danske Spil completes roll-out of player ID cards Danish state-owned operator Danske Spil has completed the roll-out of its Spil ID player registration system, which requires all customers to use a registered account to make bets in-person or online. 16th November 2020 | By Conor Mulheir Tags: Danske Spil From today, all players across Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands will be required to have a registered ID card, which can be taken out as a physical item or on a mobile app, in order to place bets at shops and kiosks. As Danske Spil is currently the only retail operator in Denmark to have mandatory customer identification controls, Folmann pointed out that it is still possible to play anonymously at competitors’ offerings. This, he said, should be rectified as soon as possible. The Sikkert Spil – or Safe Play – system was first rolled out in localised areas, starting in the Roskilde area followed by the island of Funen, and now applies across all areas of Denmark.
