Opera to launch touch browser for tablets

first_imgIf you received a tablet during the holidays you no doubt want to take full advantage of the computer’s touch capabilities. Opera Software believes touch should also extend to your Internet browser. Considering the company prides itself on making a browser for just about any device, whether desktop or mobile, it makes perfect sense that Opera would introduce a touch browser.Opera plans to unveil the first public preview of Opera for tablets during the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas this month. To help wet appetites, the company has also released a YouTube demonstration video featuring the browser running on an Android device. Two of the browser’s key features, demonstrated in the video, include smooth panning and smooth zooming. News of Opera for tablets comes on the heels of the latest desktop browser launched by Opera, dubbed Opera 11, which was launched last month.When you look at forecasts for tablet purchases in 2011 it becomes pretty clear why Opera would want to produce a browser specifically for tablets. All Things Digital recently reported that tablet sales are expected to triple this year according to Caris & Co. analyst Robert Cihra. Specifically, that’s a 226% increase accounting for up to 54 million units. The biggest winner of those tablet sales is expected to be Apple who is expected to claim 67% of those sales with iPads.
