News June 26, 2012 – Updated on January 20, 2016 Chinese still face long march to establish freedom of information Help by sharing this information Democracies need “reciprocity mechanism” to combat propaganda by authoritarian regimes News Follow the news on China News March 12, 2021 Find out more ChinaAsia – Pacific Reporters Without Borders is deeply concerned about the continued attacks by the Chinese authorities on those such as artists, human rights activists and the media who bring public attention to sensitive subjects.“Rights campaigner Hu Jia beaten up on 20 June, artist Ai Weiwei facing improper legal proceedings, journalists of the South China Morning Post forced into self-censorship… the record is shocking,” the press freedom organization said.“The list of infringements of freedom of news and information in China appears endless. Bearing this in mind, the government’s human rights action plan for 2012-2015, published by Beijing on 11 June, appears to be little more than window-dressing.“The state newspaper Global Times says the plan will serve as a foundation for new measures to protect citizens’ rights and penalize illegal detentions. The treatment of Ai Weiwei and Hu Jia, however, arouses scepticism. The authorities have yet to match their words with deeds. We therefore ask the Chinese government to provide concrete proof of its desire to improve its compliance with basic freedoms, in particular the freedom to report and receive the news.”Hu Jia beaten up, Xu Zhiyong arrestedA year after he was released from prison, human rights campaigner Hu Jia was beaten by state security men as he left his Beijing apartment on 20 June. Hu, who suffers from cirrhosis of the liver, was hit in the throat and reported slight injuries to his chest, which caused him some pain. “It is the first time it happened since I left prison,” he told the French news agency AFP.He said the reason for the attack might have been a recent visit he paid to the family of dissident Chen Guangcheng, or the fact that it was the hearing date in the trial of his friend Ai Weiwei. On 12 June, Hu was detained and questioned (Chinese / 中文) by the police for eight hours. When he returned home, about 20 police officers were parked outside his house, watching the front door.Lawyer and human rights activist Xu Zhiyong was detained by the police for two days – 7 and 8 June – after he published an article on his blog on 29 May entitled “China’s New Civil Movement”, calling for greater democracy in the country. The article, written under the pen name “Citizen”, was removed by the authorities. In an account published online after he was released, Xu says: “Over the last ten years or so, so many Chinese have died in all sorts of black jails as a result of torture; what I was going through was nothing.”Ai Weiwei harassedFor the first time since his conditional release a year ago, the artist and filmmaker Ai Weiwei was able to leave his home on 21 June without having to report to the police. However, on the very day on which his surveillance was due to end, the authorities imposed a new travel ban because of other charges pending against him, including pornography, bigamy and the illicit exchange of foreign currency. The pornography charge was prompted by a nude group portrait of the artist with four women which the authorities have classified as pornographic because of its wide distribution on the Internet, where it is reported to have been viewed more than one thousand times.Meanwhile, his prosecution for tax evasion is still progressing. On 20 June, police prevented Ai from going to court to attend a hearing. Uniformed and plain-clothes officers guarded his residence and studio in Beijing as well as the court entrance, also preventing journalists and friends of the accused from entering.Among the latter, Hu Jia decided not to go to the hearing given that Ai himself had been prevented from attending. Even Ai’s counsel Liu Xiaoyuan was not able to be present. The lawyer, out of contact from the evening of 19 June until the next day, said on his Twitter account that the authorities had forced him to leave Beijing sooner than he expected. Reporters Without Borders noted the extent to which art can be a means of circumventing censorship in China when it took part in a special event entitled “Art against censorship in China” on 17 April organized by the Liu Xiaobo Support Committee at the Jeu de Paume gallery in Paris.Hong Kong media within reach of Beijing’s long armThe central government may well have had a hand in an editorial decision by the Hong Kong English-language paper, the South China Morning Post, which published a story on 7 June on the death of the dissident Li Wangyang in suspicious circumstances. The article was reduced to a brief item and moved to a less important section of the paper. The Web-based newspaper Asia Sentinel quoted an exchange of e-mails between Alex Price, a sub-editor at the South China Morning Post, and the editor in chief Wang Xiangwei. The latter sent a curt reply to a question from Price about how the article was handled: “I don’t have to explain to you anything. I made the decision and I stand by it. If you don’t like it, you know what to do.”Although the newspaper later covered the case extensively, it could be an indication that the hand of Beijing was behind this act of self-censorship. The editor in chief responded to the controversy in an editorial on 21 June in which he said he had no desire to downplay the story of Li’s death.Reporters Without Borders is concerned that the decision may have been influenced by the Chinese government, which would be a blow to the independence of Hong Kong’s media. In addition, the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (国家广播电影电视总局), issued a notice (Chinese / 中文) to provincial radio and television authorities on 13 June announcing a three-month campaign to “combat news extortion and clean up paid-for news”.The campaign is coordinated by the Central Propaganda Department and the notice refers to the need to “create a favourable climate for the successful opening of the Party’s 18th National Congress”, due to take place this autumn. Reporters Without Borders fears the campaign may have a negative effect on investigative journalism, even though this is not its stated aim. The Steelers in the final stretch of the NFL season, coming off a bye week, need a strong finish to clinch a playoff berth. After 11 weeks the Steelers are tied with the New England Patriots, Baltimore Ravens and the Houston Texans for the best record in the AFC at 7-3. But to get home field, they must finish the season with a better record than the Ravens after losing twice to their arch rivals. The Ravens beat the Cincinnati Bengals last weekend 31-24 to move even with the Steelers, after losing to the lowly Seattle Seahawks. Because the Ravens haven’t been consistent, they could possibly lose one or two games over the final six, which means the Steelers need to finish 5-1 or no worse than 4-2 in their final six. They will come off their bye this weekend against the surprisingly poor Kansas City Chiefs, who after winning their division last season, are 3-7 and falling. This road game is followed by two tough home games versus the Bengals (6-4) and the Cleveland Browns (4-6), then they go on the road to face the most surprising team of the season, the San Francisco 49ers who have the second best record in the NFL at 9-1, just one game behind the undefeated Green Bay Packers. They wrap up the season at home versus the lowly St. Louis Rams (2-8) and the Browns again. If they play the kind of ball they are capable of they could be 6-0, but most likely 5-1, losing to the 49ers or Bengals. Can’t see them losing to both. The Ravens face the 49ers this week on Thanksgiving day at home, then finish the season with the Browns, Colts (0-10), Chargers (4-6), Browns, and the Bengals in the final game of the season. They should easily lose two games, the 49ers, Bengals or Chargers are the likely victors, but the way the Ravens have been playing it may be the Browns or Colts.AFC division leaders are the Patriots with a two game lead in the East over the New York Jets (5-5) and Buffalo Bills (5-5); the Texans are one game ahead of the Tennessee Titans (6-4) in the AFC South and the Oakland Raiders (6-4) are one game ahead of the Denver Broncos (5-5). Right now the Wild Card teams would come out of the North, the Steelers and the Bengals. The NFC is pretty much the same as the AFC. The North dominates. The Packers are undefeated and the two Wild Card teams would also come from that division with the Chicago Bears and the Detroit Lions both sitting at 7-3. Other division leaders are the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys tied on top of the East at 6-4, The New Orleans Saints (7-3) tops the AFC South with the Atlanta Falcons one game back at 6-4. No one is anywhere close to the 49ers in the NFC West with no other team having a winning record. The Steelers will probably finish 12-4 but where they finish depends on how well the Ravens play the remaining six games. An 11-5 finish may drop them right out of the playoffs. The Patriots will lose one, maybe two games, and the Texans, after losing their starting quarterback last week, will struggle which should give the Steelers home field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs.
The Dos and Don’ts of Brand Awareness Videos Earlier this year, Twitter rolled out a new feature called hovercards, which offer a preview of a user’s information when you “hover” your mouse pointer over their username. Today, Facebook is getting its own version of hovercards and the feature looks to be going live site-wide. The feature, first noticed last April, gives Facebook users a quick way to get info and interact with users without leaving the current page and could alter the way we interact on (and off) the site. While the “hovercards” don’t seem to be live for everyone quite yet, an informal poll shows that the feature has gone live for many of you. According to Facebook, the feature went live in April but it now uses a larger box with a larger profile picture view and thumbnails of mutual friends. Simply hover your mouse pointer over a person’s name and a little box will appear after a few seconds that shows the larger picture, their name and a link to send them a message. If you’re not friends yet, you can also send a friend request directly from the box. If, in your daily (hourly?) Facebook navigtion, you’ve ever wondered who someone was but didn’t want to lose your place in the timeline, then you’ve likely opened up their profile in a new tab. The hovercards make this quick and simple now, offering a base level of information and some social context on how you may or may not know them. The feature increases the likelihood for users to make even more connections on the site, as a simple mouseover suddenly gives social context and increases the chance that you’ll click that “Add as Friend” link. Does someone look familiar? Maybe they have five mutual friends that you know from riding bikes around town or maybe they know the same people you know from college.Facebook’s hovercards go one step further in increasing interaction between its users and moving the site to a fully real-time experience, such as by making it even easier to send a message and interact without having to leave what you’re doing. Clicking on “Send a Message” opens up a window in the middle of the page without interrupting your browsing of the site.At the same time, we have to wonder why the new feature doesn’t go a few steps further. For example, you can see who someone knows, but why not what school they go to or where they work? Pending their privacy settings, wouldn’t these be helpful contextual clues on figuring out whether or not you want to interact with someone? The next step we wonder about, of course, is if we’ll begin to see this functionality offered off-site. Look just below this post, for example, and you’ll see Facebook’s “Like” button. If any of your friends like this article, you’ll see a picture of them and their name. How long will it be until the hovercard will make it here too? mike melanson A Comprehensive Guide to a Content Audit Guide to Performing Bulk Email Verification Related Posts Facebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro… Tags:#Facebook#NYT#social networks#web

He’s 24, and he’s your favorite rapper. As a 22-year-old yourself, freshly graduated, you harbor the powers of the internet and somehow secure the dream job from your thrifty confines in Sydney, Australia – a temporary shelter from the true responsibilities of the motherland – Canada. Life can happen as swiftly as a resume goes viral, and since your application happened to do so, about three weeks will pass before your first day on the job.“Welcome to the tour! What do you do here?” You’re not really sure, yet. But you’re excited anyway. “I’m the intern!” Advertisement Fortunately, your meager sense of professionalism will protect you from coming across as too much of a fan during your first encounter with your new colleagues, and boss. A littered table, a MacBook Pro (acting as a rolling tray), and several extended hands are the first things you encounter. Don’t say much; being known as that quiet new kid is better than being known as the ‘OMG do you remember the first thing that kid said to us??!?’-guy. Your new boss and his friends will take in the Bulls game before show time, so just chill. You’ll spend most of your first day quietly strolling about, meandering as if a regular – notebook out, diligently note-taking as if this will give the impression of a sort of established journalist rather than the internet-kid-turned-shitty-blogger that you are/were/may well become. The first few weeks will be blurry, abstract, and smoked out. What nobody will warn you about touring with 90 others is the loneliness. Individual loneliness, but collectively as well – impersonal, half-day rendezvous the crew will make at each venue or hotel will leave much to be desired. As a family though, the growth is rich. Around those deeply eased by each other’s presence, quickly, you will find comfort as well. You’re thankful for this family, even if you are never truly able to externalize these feelings besides rolling out of your bus-bunk each day and greeting everyone with whatever designated handshake you’ve become privy to.As your tenure continues, the daily happenings (consisting of: movie-club, games 21, chain-smoking Backwoods, and digesting barely-palatable catering) feel like second nature. As routine as the schedule may feel, the lifestyle will be anything but. Unforeseen circumstances constantly arrive and must be dutifully accounted for. Appointments will have to be re-arranged to accommodate story time with Dave Chappelle. You will have to fit in dinner time drinks with Fonzworth Bentley. Physical activity is a must – try hoops with the Migos ft. Myles Turner, or perhaps a private volleyball game at Bonnaroo. Downtime will consist of a quiet New York eve; a casual 5-star meal, family style, followed by GQ’s NBA Playoff viewing party should suffice. Twitter
